Massage and Chronic Pain

Massage Therapy can be a helpful adjunct in treating chronic and persistent pain issues. Pain and the experience of pain is a very personal thing. Previous experience, our nervous system and our beliefs about pain all play a role in pain.

Pain can be a warning system for acute conditions and injury. It can be a protective mechanism for our body. Think touching a hot surface and then pulling away quickly.

But, there are times when pain lasts longer than the mechanical or chemical insult. The nervous system can be a large contributing factor when this occurs. When we have amplified pain systems we often have amplified nervous systems an vice versa.

Massage Therapy can be a useful way to help calm our nervous system down and provide help with chronic pain issues.

Netflix Review – Your World Explained, “Music” – From an Oakville Physio

It’s hard for anyone to shut off their brain to what our education disposes us towards. For a Physiotherapist this may mean:

  • Analyzing how people walk with curiosity (don’t worry, we don’t judge, we usually just wonder how we can help)
  • Watching sports net playbacks for a slow motion shot on an injury so we can predict the severity of the injury, what a potential diagnosis may be, an if we should consider dropping that player from our MLB or NBA fantasy league
  • Watching Netflix documentaries or docuseries or TED talks with the lens of a Physiotherapist.

In this blog I’ll give you a play by play on key points that would be of interest from a Physiotherapist perspective during watching the first episode of the Netflix series Explained called “Music”.

In the introduction, they set the tone in discussing the importance of music in our lives. One area where music has been found to affect human beings is the beats per minute rhythm. Simply, listening to faster music makes us move a little faster! They go on to mention briefly the impact music has on a person with movement disorders such as Parkinson’s disease move more fluidly.

What is Parkinson’s Disease?

Parkinson’s Disease (PD) is a complex neurodegenerative disease that affects every person differently. A highly visible person who was diagnosed with early onset PD is Michael J. Fox.

Conscious movement in the body begins in the brain. It is controlled by dopamine, a neurotransmitter (chemical) that carries signals between the brain and the nerves. PD symptoms appear when the cells that produce dopamine die.

Parkinson’s can progress at a different rate for each individual. The combination of symptoms also vary by person. A neurologist would be the lead in the care, but Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists and Speech Language Pathologists are all helpful members of the health care team depending on how symptoms progress.

More common symptoms of Parkinson’s include:
  • Tremor
  • Slowness and stiffness – can be helped with a Physiotherapist’s and Massage Therapists hands on-treatment as well as prescribed exercises (as can the below)
  • Decreased balance
  • Muscle rigidity
  • Constipation, which is a less common symptom can be assisted with exercise as well as a Pelvic Health Physiotherapist.

You can read more about PD from Parkinson’s Canada.

In the Netflix Docuseries Your World Explained they initially say that music an help with PD symptoms. For someone who has slower movements and difficulty initiating actions the steady beat of music can hep speed up a movement pattern and steady it.

The brainstem and cerebellum help us to create the rhythmical patterns that help us walk. This is the ancient “reptilian brain”. Our heart rate at rest should be between 60 and 80 beats per minute (BPM) but can increase with faster music.

I know our speech language pathologist and audiology friends at Chorus would also find it interesting. This is both from the sense of when sound turns into music, and the frequency of sound, to the use of music in things like voice and speech therapy. This is shown in the rehabilitation of Gabby Gifford.

We often use music in Massage Therapy, Physiotherapy, and Yoga Therapy sessions to help facilitate relaxation. This is the transition from the sympathetic nervous system (fight or flight) to the parasympathetic nervous system (rest and digest).

A huge take home from this episode is the brains ability to learn and adapt. Neuroplasticity is still being understood, but it is essentially the brains ability to retrain other parts of the brain to take over for damaged part of the brain. As in with many things, early and intensive intervention is important. The fact that humans are able to heal, progress, adapt is remarkable and shouldn’t be discounted, everyone moves at their own pace.

Get the Most out of your Massage!

It’s a busy time of year for our Oakville RMT’s. People have settled into their routines and many people at this time realize that the year has flown by and they have not used any of their Massage benefits.

Here is how we recommend you get the most out of your Massage Therapy Treatment:

Plan to arrive a few minutes early for your appointment.

  • This ensures that you are on time for your appointment and relaxed in the waiting room. Traffic can be unpredictable. this allows you to Strat relaxing even before you Massage.

Communicate with your massage therapist what your goals of the session are.

  • Are there any areas that have been bothering you? Are you looking to relax and don’t feel like chatting?

Communicate to the massage therapist what your job, or typical day entails.

  • Your RMT may take this information and suggest areas of the body to have worked on that you wouldn’t ask for. For example, if you spend most of the day seated at a computer, having your back and neck worked on will likely feel amazing! However, Massage work on your hands and forearms may be equally as beneficial and relaxing.

Let your RMT know about any other hobbies / activities you may have.

  • For the above reason. Your Massage Therapist may also suggest different self-care related to these hobbies. For example, recovery massages if you are training for an event may be helpful.

The take-home is that communication with your RMT will help them help you. Don’t be afraid to ask that an area be focussed on etc.

Choosing the Right School Bag – From an Oakville Physiotherapist

It’s almost back to school time here in Oakville. This is the time of  year where people are wondering where their summer’s have gone, and building a “to do” list. Getting a new school bag is likely on the list for many people. Having a back-pack that is well fitting for school, and even for commuters, can make a world of difference! From a Physiotherapist and Massage Therapist Perspective, we often give tips to our patients regarding the fit of a bag.

What to Look for in a School Bag:

  1. Look for a bag that goes over BOTH shoulders. This may seem obvious, but lugging around a bag with text books and laptops over one shoulder can cause low back issues, as well as neck and shoulder discomfort. Spread the load over two straps.
  2. Ensure the bag is an appropriate size. This helps with the comfort when wearing it, and also ensuring that the bag does not become too heavy. The top of the bag should stay below the shoulders and the bottom of the bag should be above the hips.
  3. Share the load! Ensure that weight is distributed through the shoulder straps. They would be padded and wider. Also, an adjustable chest and hip strap helps distribute the force of the bag during the walk to school.
  4. It’s all physics. Place the heaviest items and books closest to the body. The body has to work harder there further the load is from its centre point.
  5. Unload the unnecessary. The bag should weigh approximately no more than 10% of a Childs body weight.

Our Oakville Physiotherapists and Massage Therapists are seeing more children and youth with neck and back pain. Often school bags and the loads carried are part of the issue. Another part of the issue is that many of our kids, unless involved in organized sports, aren’t moving enough. Playing and movement can help with endurance and strength of these muscles. So get moving as a family!

Question (s):

Do you treat yourself to regular Massage Therapy? Do you stop treatment when your benefits run out? Do you consider Massage to be part a regular wellness program? Do you consider Massage to be only a luxury?

Yes it is convenient to have access to private insurance that covers Registered Massage Therapy. It’s even better to have a direct billing option for Registered Massage Therapy services.

But…your benefits didn’t pay for that purse you have…

The benefits for Massage or any treatment, goes beyond the superficial. It really is an investment in yourself and your well-being.

  1. Massage Helps Athletes Recover  and prepare for events. Massage Therapists can help an athlete work through areas of tensions and tightness during training season.
  2. Massage can help with Relaxation – Having a massage can help a person calm the nervous system. A person who has a tendency to have a heightened nervous system can benefit from Massage Therapy as it can help move them from a “fight or flight” to a more “rest and digest” system.
  3. Massage Can Help with Immunity – This taps into the relaxation effect. Our immune system is stronger when our nervous system maintains a more relaxed state. Massage Therapy can assist in this relaxation effect.
  4. Massage can help with pain – Massage can help calm down the nervous system which is related to how we experience pain. A study from 2011 found that massage techniques on people with fribromyalgia, helped decrease pain and increase quality of life.  Massage can also be helpful after joint replacement surgery to help decrease pain and scar tissue.
