Acupuncture

The team at Oakville’s Palermo Plus Physio and Wellness is pleased to announce that we are now offering TCM acupuncture. Long time team members Josephine Ong and Jason Li are so very happy to be able to assist patients in a different way. They are available for TCM appointments both for previous massage patients as well as new patients.

TCM ACUPUNCTURE

TCM or Traditional Chinese Medicine has a longstanding tradition of over two thousand years. TCM draws upon the theory of Yin and Yang and the theory of Wu Xing (the 5 elements) to explain balance in the functioning of the body. TCM has been recently gaining popularity in the West, as medical science and research provides some clarity to what TCM practitioners have known for generations.

What to expect during a TCM / Acupuncture visit:

When visiting Oakville’s Palermo Plus Physiotherapy and Wellness Centre’s TCM acupuncturist, we ask that you fill out your intake forms in advance of your assessment. This allows the practitioner to review your needs prior to your appointment time. They can be more efficient with your TCM / Acupuncture visit. These forms are required by the College of Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioners and Acupuncturists of Ontario.

The practitioner will review these forms with you when you come in and may ask you to expand on your medical history and symptoms you may be experiencing. They will explore what your goals of seeking Traditional Chinese Medicine / Acupuncture are.

The practitioner will perform an assessment, and provide you with a diagnosis. They will also discuss with you a treatment plan in order to work towards your expressed goals.

Traditional Chinese Medicine uses diagnosis techniques that you may be unfamiliar with. The practitioner will uses tongue and pulse diagnosis in order to form a complete picture of your health and best work with you to your goals.

Tongue Diagnosis

The observation of your tongue allows the TCM practitioner a window into what is happening in your body internally. This technique is used in conjunction with others to help confirms the diagnosis of a disease. All major organs in the body have a connection to the tongue. The tongue will be affected by any pathological changes that happen to the organ.

The TCM practitioner will be looking for the colour, and shape of the tongue. They will also observe the colour and thickness of the tongues coating. Your practitioner will discuss with you what any finding mean in terms of blockages, specific organ systems, blood deficiencies, and what area of your tongue corresponds to what organs. The proposed treatment plan will be to help bring any imbalances into balance again.

Pulse Diagnosis

The TCM practitioner will assess your pulse on each arm. This will give them information on the blood and energy in the body. They will also be able to gain more information on the organ systems of the body, and which is out of balance or responsible for illness or disease.

The pulse is assessed for its strength, regularity, width, level and other special characteristics of blood flow.

What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture uses very thin, sterile needles in specific points in the body. The process of acupuncture is to aid the body in healing itself. In TCM disease is contributed to or caused by imbalances in the body and/or  blockages in energy (Qi). Disease can also be caused in the blood, through pathogens, or even emotional contribution. The acupuncture needles work along a system of channels in the body to remove blockages, expel pathogens, help regulate emotions, strengthen organ systems, rebalance your body, and revitalize your Qi.
