Oakville Chiropodist Nasim Rezania – Team Tuesday

It’s time for another team Tuesday, where the team members at our Oakville clinic Palermo Physiotherapy and Wellness are highlighted. Here you will learn little more about each person as well as their profession.

The focus of today is Oakville Chiropodist Nasim. Nasim is a newer addition to the Palermo Physiotherapy and Wellness team and fits in wonderfully!

Read more about Chiropodist Nasim below:

What made you decide to become a Chiropodist?

Having a background in healthcare (Speech & Language Pathology) and for other various reasons, I decided to pursue new challenges when I immigrated to Canada. Considering the high demand for Chiropody/Podiatry services, I selected to become a chiropodist.

Why are you passionate about the Profession of Chiropody?

Chiropody related treatments have a major role in preventing serious health conditions. This importance made me passionate to be a chiropodist. It gives me a good feeling to help my patients have a better quality of life.

What do you like most about working at Oakville’s Palermo Physiotherapy and Wellness Centre?

Friendly staff and well-equipped clinic are two big pluses. Also, communicating with the other therapists is wonderful in best helping our patients. The location of the clinic in the Palermo Professional Centre medical building facilitates interprofessional communication.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

Spending time with family and friends, watching movies, yoga, and cycling.

Do you have a favourite sport or activity?

As I said before, I love yoga and cycling. From time to time I happen to watch sports, but I don’t spend much time watching televised sports.

What’s the most recent book you’ve read / movie you’ve watched?

Kafka on the shore/Arrival

Team Tuesday – Meet Oakville Physiotherapist Lisa

Introducing Lisa Clifford! Lisa practices as a Registered Physiotherapist at Oakville’s Palermo Physiotherapist and Wellness Centre.

Why did you decide to become a Physiotherapist?

When I first started in post-secondary I didn’t have an end-game. I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do when I “grew-up”. I often joke that I went to university initially to play fastpitch softball. Many people don’t know that I changed programs into the Paramedic program at Humber college. I loved the program but began to realize at that point I was more interested in helping patients with treatment progressions, and seeing them through a treatment plan. I had been a Physiotherapy patient as an athlete in an outpatient setting and had seen grandparents go through physiotherapy in the hospital due to medical issues.

Why are you passionate about the Physiotherapy Profession?

Working with a Physiotherapist can be so effective in helping patients reach their goals. Many people relate Physiotherapy to sports medicine and Athletes in particular. While that is the case there are still many people who are underutilizing the services of Physio’s. The most important things a Physiotherapist can provide to a person is education and exercise. There are people who have been told they shouldn’t squat because they have knee arthritis. Thinking logically, the movement of getting up and down from a toilet and chair, is that movement. Physiotherapy intervention in this case would be beneficial in teaching someone how to do a movement safely and effectively. I could go on, but the reality is for ANYONE, if you would like to move and function better, stay mobile and active, Physiotherapists are here to help. That being said, if your goal is to be able to get up from the floor or maintain a strong core, simply placing electrodes and a heat pack on your body will not get you there.

What do you like most about working at Oakville’s Palermo Physiotherapy and Wellness Centre?

We are so lucky to have awesome co-workers. To be able to collaborate, bounce ideas off of each other and learn from one another is amazing. Everyone I work with truly cares about what they’re doing and helping patients reach their goals. Everyone has a different educational and experiential background which adds to the dynamic.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

I love being outside and active. Hiking in the escarpment, stand up paddle boarding in the area as well as gardening are at the top of my list. I also love spending time doing yoga and reading. I leave my mat set up most of the time so I can just hop on a spend a couple minute or a longer session moving, breathing and stretching.

Do you have a favourite sport or activity?

Baseball / softball are at the top of my list to watch and play, but I love playing any sport and being active. Lifting weights and working out with friends is also a great way for a visit and workout!

What’s the most recent book you’ve read / movie you’ve watched?

I’m currently reading Buddha’s Brain. It’s a great comprehensive read about the brain and body’s physiology and the way we can tap into in and foster it’s growth positively. I recently saw On the Basis of Sex. It’s an amazing biopic of Ruth Bader Ginsberg as she navigates law school, marriage and her early career. It highlights her contribution to gender equity in America.

Gifts for the Yoga Lover

It’s always nice to support a persons healthy habits.

If someone on your list has a love of all things yoga, and you don’t, it may be difficult to know what they may need to enhance their practice.

This list is not all inclusive but hopefully it will act as a guide for the possibilities of what they could use.

Yoga Gifts:

Many people are trying to adopt minimalism into their lives. If you know your loved one is trying to do the same, a gift that is an experience may be most appropriate!

  • Class Passes – It’s always nice to experience different classes and different instructors. Take that extra step and see if there are any special classes or programs being offered in your community.
  • Attend a class / weekend with your loved one. It’s enjoyable to spend time together. Give the gift of shared experience.
  • Private Yoga Classes – Even a seasoned yogi can benefit from a few private sessions to enhance their practice. This option is also a good one for a person that likes the idea of yoga but is not quite sure where to start for their body.

Helping hands from Oakville Physio, massage, yoga, yoga therapy, foot clinic

If your loved one has the bare minimum to get through a class but not many props for their home practice, you may be able to help them with this.

  • Yoga bolsters – think amazing pillows that can support your body in different positions and help you relax. There are larger online companies that sell these. You may also be able to find some small businesses online on a site like Etsy.
  • Yoga blocks – foam blocks are the most common. There are also cork blocks. Foam blocks can be found at many sports stores or athletic departments as wells yoga specific stores.
  • Yoga straps – Not all Yogis are “Gumby’s”…and that’s OK!. Straps can help make certain poses safer and more accessible. They can also be used in restorative and relaxation poses.
  • A Great Yoga Mat – A good yoga mat is an investment. If your loved one has a basic mat and they are feeling good suing it, great! If they are like me, I like having a thicker mat and one where I don’t slide around on my sweaty hands! A good mat should last over time if it’s cared

Consider stepping outside of a direct yoga gift. If your loved one is looking to enhance their practice and perhaps meditate more or learn different aspects of meditations there are many options.

  • Singing bowl – Using a wand to create a beautiful sound. These operate with different frequencies that resonate with us differently.
  • Mala Beads – serves the purpose of being a beautiful necklace and a tool to help with meditation. Many people will sit with these beads and repeat a mantra for each bead.
  • Books – books on meditation, positive though books, books with guided meditations. If your loved one is reader, and even if they’re not there are many books out there for everyone!
  • Guided Meditations – You can often find guided meditations on CDs or online.
  • Apps – There are apps that remind or assist with meditations such as headspace.

Hiker on trail showing oakville Physiotherapy clinic

Have a safe and happy long weekend everyone! From the team at Oakville’s Palermo Physiotherapy and Wellness Centre.

It’s Been 4 Years!

Time has been flying! 4 years ago, on August 5th, Oakville’s Palermo Physio and Wellness opened its doors. Our first patients and visitors may remember walking through the, not quite finished hallways. They may also recall the “gentle” hum of our neighbour’s units being completed.

It has been amazing to see our clinic grow within Oakville’s Palermo community. We have increased our number of Physiotherapists and Massage Therapists, and expanded our Chiropodist (foot care) services. Our hours have also expanded to help service our patients.

We have even seen our surrounding community grow opening of Palermo Village Retirement Residence, the expansion of St. Lukes church, and the opening of the Mint condos on the other side of Old Bronte Street. The Palermo Professional Centre, just a short distance West of the Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital is now home to a variety of health care practitioners.

Thank you for your trust and patronage over these past 4 years. It’s amazing how time flies. The team at Palermo Physiotherapy and Wellness Centre looks forward to continuing to provide our Physiotherapy, Massage Therapy, Chiropody and Yoga Therapy Services to Palermo and Oakville communities!

Travel – From the Eyes of an Oakville Physio

Our professions and educational background influence how we see and experience the world. As a Physiotherapist I can’t help but notice how people move, walk, use the stairs etc. Being a Physiotherapist also influences travel and how I experience trips. My recent trip to London and Edinburgh are no different.

On the plane rides I made sure to wear my compression socks. While I have never had any vascular incidents such as deep vain thrombosis, definitely want to prevent any possibility of these as well as spider veins and vericose veins that can be are result of major pressure changes.

Oakville Physio, compression socks, compression stockings

I recommend to everyone who travels whether it is by plane or longer car rides, to wear compression socks and stockings. It’s easier to prevent vascular issues than to treat them after the fact. Wearing compression is an easy way to do this. I also often wear them at work simply because I’m on my feet for longer periods of time.

While in London I took a tour of the Arsenal football stadium. Of course what I found to most interesting to see wasn’t necessarily what the typical person may be excited about. I loved taking a look at the Physiotherapy treatment area of the team. This would be the area where the Physio’s would get the players all taped up for their games as well as after game Physio and rehab treatment.

Oakville Physio at arsenal Physio room

I think some people would be surprised that it looks like a “typical” physiotherapy treatment room. I would be interested to see where thee team would do more of there strength and conditioning and exercise based rehabilitation.

Just across from the Physio room is an awesome rehab “pool”. The soccer players can use this after games and practices. The areas to sit are ergonomic and they also move to help massage. I son’t know about you, but I could handle having this in my house!

While on the tour of the Arsenal football (soccer for us Canadians), another thing stood out to my Physiotherapy mind. There was an accessible washroom with a sign on it that said “not all disabilities are visible”. This is a great reminder that no everyone has outward signs such as crutches or a wheelchair to show that an accessible washroom is a better option for them. This also true of every day interactions. Everyone is different, some people take longer to process questions and respond, and some people may be walking or moving more slowly. It’s important to remember this and have patience while we’re out and about.

Accessible sign from an Oakville Physio, massage, foot clinic

Not many people here know this, but most museums and galleries in the United Kingdom have free entry. This is an awesome opportunity to take in some culture and science! I popped into the National Gallery of Scotland and really enjoyed their science section. I was able to see Dolly the sheep. I was also able to see some examples of materials used in total hip replacement surgeries.Oakville Physio

Travelling is an amazing way to see and experience the world. Like many cities, the best way of getting around is by using public transit, like the tube, and walking. If you’re planning on touring like this make sure you prepare by going for walks and hikes, and of course bring good shoes! It’s no fun to be sore and injured during a vacation. Making sure you have adequate strength an endurance is the best way to go about this.
