During pregnancy, pregnant women experience many changes in their body. For many women swelling in the legs and feet become an issue. While this can be uncomfortable, it is for other reasons it is important to wear compression.

At our Oakville Physiotherapy, Massage and Foot Clinic, we recommend for pregnant women to begin wearing compression socks / stockings early in their pregnancy.

There are many reasons to wear compression during pregnancy (and after):

  • Prevention of swollen, tired legs.
  • Prevention of pregnancy related varicose veins.
  • Prevention of spider veins.
  • Prevention of swelling and blood clots postpartum and post cesarean section.

It is optimal to put on your compression socks first thing in the morning. Your legs and feet will have the least swelling at this point. You can buy over the counter compression, but many insurance companies will cover compression socks and stockings that are 20-30mmHg in compression or higher. Some insurance companies require a Physician’s prescription for this.

It is especially important for flight attendants who are pregnant to use compression, as they are more at risk for all of the above due to frequent pressure changes as well as being on their feet for long periods of time.

If you have questions about how compression can benefit you please feel free to ask your Physiotherapist, Chiropodist, RMT, or Pelvic Health Physiotherapist.
