Starting pelvic floor physiotherapy can feel like a big step, and it’s completely natural to have questions or feel unsure about what the first session will involve. At our clinic, we believe in empowering you with knowledge and making sure you feel fully informed, comfortable, and in control of your care at every stage.

Here’s what you can typically expect during your initial pelvic floor physiotherapy appointment, including a clear explanation about internal assessments and how we approach consent.
A Thorough Discussion About Your Health
Your first session will begin with a detailed conversation. Your physiotherapist will ask about:
- Your medical history
- Any current symptoms or concerns
- Bladder, bowel, and sexual health
- Pregnancy and birth history (if applicable)
- Lifestyle and physical activity
This part of the session is essential to help us understand your situation and tailor your treatment plan to your unique needs.
Education and Goal Setting
We’ll take time to explain how the pelvic floor muscles function, how they can become dysfunctional, and how physiotherapy can help. You’ll have the opportunity to ask questions, and together we’ll discuss your goals and expectations for treatment.
The Physical Assessment
- External Assessment
This may include observing posture, breathing, abdominal activation, hip, and lower back movement, and how your body functions.
- Internal Assessment
In some cases, an internal vaginal or rectal examination is recommended to properly assess the strength, tone, coordination, and function of your pelvic floor muscles. We always ask for your explicit consent before proceeding with any internal assessment. You have the right to decline this part of the exam and you will still receive high-quality care. If you initially agree and later change your mind, you can withdraw your consent at any time. We will stop immediately and support your choice, without question or pressure.
Your comfort, safety and trust are our top priorities. We want you to feel confident in your care and fully in control at every step.
Treatment Planning
Based on your assessment and your goals, we’ll start building a personalized treatment plan. This might include:
- Pelvic floor muscle retraining
- Breathing and relaxation techniques
- Education on bladder/bowel habits
- Postural or movement strategies
- Manual therapy or soft tissue release
- Lifestyle or exercise modifications
In some cases, we may begin with gentle exercises or techniques during the first session or we may simply use this appointment as a chance to gather information and discuss next steps.
We understand that pelvic health can be a sensitive topic. Whether you’re coming in for pelvic pain, incontinence, postpartum recovery or general pelvic floor health, we’re here to guide you with compassion and expertise.
