Happy back-to-school Halton!
With September upon us, the evenings and mornings are cooler. With this and back-to-school, fall fashions are starting up and footwear is changing.
Switching footwear at the beginning of the school year, as well as walking to school can result in foot pain for some students. After getting used to wearing flip flops, sandals and lighter runners all summer, it can be an adjustment to wear sneakers, casual shoes, or dress shoes.
- Try breaking in your new school shoes gradually in the days leading up to the first day of school before wearing them for a full day or walking across campus in them. If you’re going to be walking a lot around school / campus, make sure you’re wearing shoes rather than flip flops with no support which can lead to more frequent injuries.
- Stretch your calves with a typical “runners stretch” through the day.
- Give yourself a self massage on the bottom of your feet with a tennis or lacrosse ball. This can feel great to increase the circulation.
- Custom orthotics can be helpful especially in unsupportive “fashion shoes” to increase joint alignment and cushioning.
