Happy New Year! 2022

The team at Oakville’s Palermo Physio and Wellness Centre would like to wish everyone Happy New Year!

We know the past couple of years have been challenging for everyone. We appreciate your continued trust in our practitioners for your wellness needs. Our Physiotherapists, Chiropodists, Registered Massage Therapists and Yoga Therapist work hard to stay current and provide you with evidence based care.

We want you to know and believe that you are worth the time and energy spent on yourself.

This means attending appointments as well as committing to your home program in whatever way works for you!

It is important to keep the communication lines open with your health care practitioner whether it be a physio (PT), a massage therapist (RMT), a Chiropodist (foot care specialist) or Yoga Therapist. Communicating your goals as well as your expectations is an important part of your care.

It takes 4 weeks of consistent work to build habits. Small but purposeful steps will get you there. A large goal can feel like you are looking up at Mount Everest.

Break your large goal into small steps. Keep the large goal in the back of your mind and focus on the first. Then go from there.

Involve your loved ones to make it easier. If your goal is to move more, but it takes away from daily time, then try including the family. Go for hikes, walks, bike rides, or play at the park! Trade off with your partner with child care, animal care, or household chores. Don’t be afraid to carve out some time that is for you. What a great example to show your loved ones that you are worth it!

Look ahead and schedule yourself in. Many people love having regular massage therapy. Unfortunately time slips away and private benefits are left to the end of the year and it adds stress to try and find and schedule massage services with their favourite practitioner. Try scheduling maintenance appointments at regular intervals in advance. If your schedule changes you can always modify your appointments. Having regular foot care appointments (6-10 weeks apart) booked in and scheduled in your calendar ensures time does not get away from you. It is easier to stay on top of things like foot care and your wellness, than having to play catch-up.

We hope you have a safe and healthy 2022.

Remember, we are here for all of your Physiotherapy, Massage Therapy, Foot Care and Yoga Therapy needs.

We would like to wish Ana a big welcome as she takes over for Kate in the Office Manager role. She is looking forward to meeting everyone and will be smiling at you from under her mask!

We are working hard to make this transition a smooth one.

Palermo Professional Centre – Building Directory – December 2020

The North Oakville Medical / Professional building our Palermo Phyiotherapy and Wellness Clinic is in has continued to grow. With that, we’ve been getting numerous calls,  drop-bys as well as our patients asking about the other services in the building.  Our Oakville Physiotherapists, Massage Therapists, Chiropodist (Foot Care) and Yoga Therapist are happy to welcome everyone to Oakville’s Palermo community. The building housed its first tenants beginning and July 2014 as has continued to grow quickly! It’s a treat in a medical building of this size to have free parking available as well as three functioning elevators. As the parking lot gets busier remember that there is also parking available to a second level.

We’re open for in-person & virtual visits.

As Halton and Oakville moves into the Red stage of Covid-19 response, we have received many questions regarding the status of our North Oakville clinic.

Our team continues to be available for in-person visits. We continue to be taking Physio, Massage, Acupuncture, Foot Care, and Yoga Therapy patients in person. We are continuing to follow screening, cleaning, contact-tracing and PPE (personal protective equipment) procedures.

We also continue to take physiotherapy patients via virtual or telehealth means. This means a video consultation and treatment. It is amazing how effective video physio has been for our patients and their families. We are also able to direct-bill to most insurance companies for telehealth /video physiotherapy assessments and treatments.

We have been able to “see” patients from all over not just Oakville, but also Ontario for physiotherapy!

telehealth physio for pain and injury

We are taking direction from provincial government officials regarding future action, as well direction from our individual professional colleges. This means that the College of Physiotherapists of Ontario, College of Massage Therapists of Ontario, The College of Acupuncturists of Ontario, and the College of Chiropodists of Ontario will continue to guide us in terms of providing the safest environment for our patients.

If you have any questions, concerns, or would like to book in, please do not hesitate to Contact us!

Our Covid-19 Clinic Screening Questions and Process

You will likely have these screening questions memorized soon. In compliance with all of our professional colleges (Chiropody, Physiotherapy, Massage Therapy) and the Ministry of Health for in person appointments, our Oakville based clinic will be conducting COVID-19 screening questions.

All our colleges are just a little bit different. In order to have a blanket clinic policy we will be operating to satisfy the most stringent of requirements.

You will be asked these questions at 3 points.

  1. When you book the appointment. We understand that some people book appointments weeks in advance, this is why steps 2 and 3 will happen.
  2. When you enter our Oakville office space. When you check in for your appointment you will be asked the COVID-19 screening questions. If you “fail” the screening your appointment will be rescheduled and you will be provided with further steps.
  3. When you are taken in to your Chiropody, Physiotherapy, Massage appointment. Your practitioner is mandated by their college to screen you as well. Rest assured that our whole team including your practitioner will be required to self screening prior to bing allowed to enter the clinic.

We appreciate your patience with this regard as know that this may impede the flow of your day. Your honesty is appreciated as we wish to protect our team and all our patients.

Screening Questions:

  1. Do you have a fever, new onset of cough, worsening chronic cough, shortness of breath, or difficulty breathing?
  2. Have you had any close contact with anyone with acute respiratory illness OR travelled outside of Canada in the past 14 days?
  3. Do you have a confirmed case of COVID-19 OR had close contact with a confirmed case of COVID-19?
  4. Do you have two (2) or more of the following symptoms:
  • Sore throat
  • Hoarse Voice
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Decreased or loss of sense of smell or taste
  • Chills
  • Headache
  • Unexplained fatigue / malaise
  • Diarrhea
  • Abdominal pain
  • Nausea/ Vomiting
  • Pink eye (conjunctivitis)
  • Runny nose / sneezing without other known cause
  • Nasal congestion without other known cause

5. If the person is 65 years of age or older, are they experiencing any of the following:

  • delirium, unexplained or increase number of falls, acute functional decliner worsening chronic conditions?

COVID-19 Screening Results:

If responds to ALL screening questions NO = COVID Screen Negative

If responds to ANY of the screening questions YES = COVID Screen Positive

If you are “COVID Screen Positive then:

• You cannot attend in person our Oakville clinic for at least 14 days; (we will continue to offer virtual physiotherapy sessions so you may reschule into one of those times if you would like for Physiotherapy treatment);

• You must complete the Ontario Government’s self-assessment; and

• Contact an appropriate authority such as your family physician, local medical officer of health or Telehealth Ontario.

We wish you and your loved ones all the best and if you have further questions regarding our screening measures of other measures out Oakville clinic will be taking, please contact us.

Thank You’s

It’s been almost 1 month since our Oakille Physio, Massage, Chiropody and Yoga Therapy Clinic made the difficult but necessary decision to temporarily close our doors to in person visits.

We want everyone to know that we are still here for you.

If you are having difficulties or concerns please reach out. We are here to help.

Our Physiotherapists are able to treat our patients now using virtual platforms. This Virtual Physiotherapy is of the same high quality individualized care that our Physio’s strive to provide. Most insurance companies, including WSIB and MVA (car accident) insurance companies have now shifted to allow virtual Physiotherapy or telehealth physio.

Telehealth physio, virtual physio in Ontario, port credit, lorn park, oakville, Rosedale, vaughn, barrie, caledon, Collingwood, blue mountain,

I would like to thank our whole team who has adjusted along the way. I know our Massage Therapists and Chiropodists are also eager to get back to working hands on with patients when it is safe to do so.

Thank you to our families and friends who have been sounding boards and who have lent their support and various areas of expertise. This is a difficult time for everyone and to feel support and uplifted has been so helpful in the process of moving forward with a new and exciting platform.

We would like to than our IT company TechPeer for helping us along the way as we adjust to providing quality Physiotherapy care from an online platform. I did not want our Physiotherapists taking extra risks coming in to work, so TechPeer was extremely efficient and helpful in helping set us up to provide Virtual Physio from our homes.

We would like to thank Brick Whale Creative for helping us adjust our website quickly to reflect the changes we have made to our current care model. They are always helpful in offering options and suggestions. It really is a collaborative effort with these things that are out of the realm of our expertise!

A big thank our patients for continuing to trust us with their care using virtual Physiotherapy. It has been and continues to be the biggest compliment when you are so pleased with your care that you refer your loved ones to us, share your positive experiences with others and share your positive experiences on facebook and google reviews. These small things really do make a big difference.

As our scope or reach has now extended as a result of Virtual Physical Therapy care, if your friends and family who live outside of Oakville and Halton need Physiotherapy during this time of self isolation and physical distancing, our Oakville based Physiotherapists are able to assess and treat anyone residing in Ontario.

If you are concerned about the technology aspect, please don’t be. The platforms we use are very user friendly and if you have any difficulty we are here to talk you through it!

Please do not hesitate to reach out info@palermophysio.ca.

We understand that your financial situation may have changed since starting your treatment or since certain government measures have taken effect. We are here to support you and work with you. Please contact our clinic to see how we can work together for you.

And We’re (Virtually) Back…Online Physiotherapy in Ontario

What is Telehealth or Virtual Physiotherapy?

Telehealth and in this case, tele-rehabilitation is the remote delivery on healthcare services. We can provide Physiotherapy, preferably by video according to our College of Physiotherapists of Ontario. We will be using the terms Telehealth, virtual physiotherapy, and online consultation interchangeably.

Is Telehealth Right for me?

Most people requiring physiotherapy can benefit from accessing it virtually. If you are unsure of how we can help you please contact us and we can help answer any questions you may have.

What does a Virtual Physiotherapy Appointment Look Like?

  • You will be sent an appointment link after you book formally with us. This link will allow you to access your appointment on your smartphone, tablet, laptop or desktop computer.
  • Your Physiotherapist will provide a thorough assessment via video. They will ask you the history of what you are seeking treatment for, as well as more questions to help give the Physio a clear picture.
  • The Physiotherapist may ask you to show the area if appropriate (they may be looking for bruising, redness, swelling and compare it to the other side)
  • Based on your responses to the questions asked by the Physio, you will likely be asked to do some movements that assess range of motion, strength or function
  • Your Physiotherapist will take the information gained from the initial part of the assessment and the more active portion and formulate an opinion and / or diagnosis. This opinion, and your goals, will help the Physio formulate a treatment that day and a plan for the future
  • The biggest thing Physiotherapists can provide to you is education and exercise. You may be surprised to see how effective this type of Physiotherapy can be!
  • If you are requiring of more time due to communication differences and require us to type or vice versa please let us know and we can accommodate that!

What Might be included in Virtual / Online Physio Consultations?

Our Ontario based Physiotherapists CAN provide:

  • Education – One of the main things a Physiotherapist can give you is eduction on what’s going on and how to proceed safely
  • Teaching you self mobilization techniques (or for a loved one to assist safely)
  • Self-Massage and soft tissue techniques
  • Stretching exercises for home, sport, work
  • Strengthening exercises for home, sport, work
  • Balance exercises
  • Core stabilization exercises
  • Functional exercises
  • Ergonomic advice for home (video Physiotherapy in your own home we can see how you lift laundry, moved clothes in and out, make the bed, put your baby in the crib, get up and down from the ground, garden etc.)
  • Ergonomic advise for your home office – many people are in the position of having a impromptu home office set-up using dining room tables, and laptops we can do a thorough assessment and get you going in a more comfortable way.
  • Posture and sleeping advice
  • Home yoga classes

We Cannot:

  • Provide manual therapy (hands-on)
  • Provide acupuncture of dry needling

I see that you offer Physiotherapy for infants, children, and youth, can you do Online Physiotherapy for paediatric patients?

  • Yes!
  • With a parent present we can run full session of play based physiotherapy / age appropriate exercises
  • We are able to offer environmental suggestions, positioning and suggestions for your babies
  • Torticollis sessions would show you stretches, positioning and activity based treatment. We’ll be online for the session giving advice and demonstrating for you!
All ages showing age range of oakville Physiotherapy clinic patients

What Equipment do I Need for my Online Physiotherapy appointment?

  • An emergency contact should something happen to you during your session
  • We recommend a device that is mobile like your smart phone, a tablet, or a laptop but a desk top is fine!
  • The device you use should have a camera
  • If you have wireless / bluetooth earbuds or headphones this may be helpful if we get you moving away from the video source during the online Physio assessment or treatment
  • Lighting – ideally the space used has lighting that allows a clear picture
  • Clothing – wear something that is easy to move in. For example, if you have a shoulder issue, a tank top will be great or a halter, if its a knee issue shorts are perfect.
  • Adequate internet signal
  • We will work with what you have at home in terms of exercise equipment

How Effective is Telehealth / Virtual Physiotherapy Compared to In-Person Sessions?

  • Recent studies have shown a 90% agreement between Telehealth and in-person practitioners for accuracy of diagnosis for clients
  • Studies have shown close to 80% satisfaction with Telehealth compared to in person sessions
  • Our patients have been pleasantly surprised by how effective they have found this new experience of Telehealth Physio
  • If you have any concerns about this we are happy to set up a brief chat to see if a Telehealth / virtual Physiotherapy assessment / treatment are appropriate for you and to put your mind at ease.

Is Virtual Physiotherapy Covered by 3rd Party Insurers?

  • Yes! In Ontario many 3rd party insurers have allowed Telehealth Physio to be covered.
  • It is still fairly new and ever changing so we highly encourage you to check with your individual provider.
  • At this time Sunlife, Greatwest life (GWL), ICBC, Manulife, and in some cases Blue Cross  are providing coverage.

Who can Treat you via Telehealth?

  • Our clinic is in Oakville, Ontario and all of our Physiotherapists are registered in Ontario, as such we can treat anyone who resides in Ontario, remotely.
  • If you have travelled out of Halton or live elsewhere in Ontario, we can treat you via Telehealth  Physiotherapy / online consultation.
